Kathryn H. Tolan, Partner

Kathryn Tolan began her professional career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, completing an extensive training program in large group employee benefits.

Following her time with Met, Ms. Tolan became a Consultant for an international benefit consulting firm headquartered in London, England, working on a variety of health, life, and disability projects. Ms. Tolan then joined a regional consulting firm in Boston, Massachusetts as an Associate. In this position, she managed consulting teams and successfully completed a wide variety of consulting assignments. Ms. Tolan, with Carol Chandor and Piper McNealy, founded Boston Benefit Partners, LLC in 1998. In her role as partner, she has managed projects for several large clients including Boston Financial Data Services, Inc., the Boston Teachers Union Health and Welfare Fund, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Specific career experience includes:

Developing comparison studies and new benefit strategies for several clients creating new joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions and spin-off situations.
Creating the first dental re-enrollment analysis survey for a large managed dental and vision fund, including questionnaire design, distribution, and oversight of the tabulation process and final analysis of the results.
Establishing a cross-functional team to create, distribute and analyze a quality of care survey for a large regional HMO on behalf of an established local client; also helping to initiate substantial changes within the HMO that addressed quality of care issues discovered through the survey process.
Working with a large state agency to investigate the feasibility of providing voluntary vision and dental benefits to the state's 70,000+ retirees; assisting in the vision and dental procurement process, including plan design, cost and funding considerations.

Ms. Tolan graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a B.S. in Management. She also received a certificate in the study of Evidence Based Dentistry from the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Oxford in England. Ms. Tolan is a member of the New England Employee Benefits Council (NEEBC). She has been a key speaker at the NEEBC COBRA workshop for the last several years and the International Business Communications' Dental Managed Care Conference. Ms. Tolan also co-presented employer specific information on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) privacy provisions. In addition, Ms. Tolan has published her work in several benefit industry publications.
